Notes from Sheepland
Orla Barry is a hard-working, lipstick-wearing sheep farmer in rural Wexford. She is also a visual artist, renowned for her video and sound art. She strides confidently from art seminars to the Tullamore Show, lambing in April and shearing in June, working tirelessly to make a living from eco-farming in the face of global demand for faster, cheaper meats and wools. But while tied to the demands of the ovine calendar she must make time to let her creativity flow.

Before shearing, done with electric devices and hand shears, lambs are separated from the flock. The lambs are not yet shorn but dipped in a disinfectant, parasiticidal liquid prescribed by law. For the auction, held in autumn, the sheep for sale are loaded on special trucks and transported from the pasture to the public sale.
Sheep Shearing in Tunisia
A herd backs into a dusty courtyard. The sheep, on the ground with their four legs bound, are quickly and skillfully shorn. The animals, now without their fleece, leave one by one, leaping over a narrow channel to allow the shepherds to count them. Everything is crystal clear, efficient, encouraging in a sense – and this goes for both the shearing and the film.
