Bora Bora is the most popular destination in French Polynesia, certainly because of its lagoon, considered the most beautiful lagoon in the world. In this context, the islet could have sunk under concrete and pollution, and the reef could have been irreparably impacted. However, thanks to the will of a handful of inhabitants including the mayor of the island, Bora Bora is today a model of sustainable development, with water treatment technologies that are 15 years ahead of France, programs to rebuild corals and protect wildlife, educational actions and the rehabilitation of Polynesian traditions such as “rahui” and the establishment of a monitoring network using new technologies. All of this makes the island a veritable open-air laboratory that shows the way for all tropical coastal environments around the world.
The Great Barrier Reef
The well-known actress and world champion in freediving, Marina Kazankova, presents the most beautiful and wonderful reef in the world: the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Threatened by the ongoing global warming and over acidification of the ocean, it is fighting for the preservation of this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site. She takes us on an extraordinary journey from the Hardy Reef across the Whitsunday Islands to the unique Coral Cays. It is accompanied by a variety of reef-based life forms such as whale sharks, turtles and the rare, up to three meters long giant grouper. Once again we experience the underwater world of the world’s largest reef with its hidden caves, mysterious shipwrecks and fantastic horizontal waterfalls.

A Coral Reef Revival
In recent decades, humans have lost 25 to 40 percent of the world's corals due to seawater temperature rise and ocean acidification. Dr David Vaughan has been studying corals his whole life, but until eight years ago, could only watch the crisis unfold. After an accident one day in the lab, Vaughan discovered a secret of coral reproduction, and is now working to replant dwindling coral reefs at an astonishing rate. The Atlantic visited Dr Vaughan in the Florida Keys to uncover how the process works and understand how much hope there is to revitalize our reefs.

Coral reefs are believed by many to have the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem on the planet. A lot of the life found here can seem very alien at first, they occupy less than 1 percent of the ocean floor but yet are home to more than 25 percent of all marine life. Warm water reefs typically come to mind when thinking of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, these reefs are very well known but they don’t just occur in warm waters. In this one hour special, we are brought into this alien environment and discover for ourselves a strange, hidden world that is simply abundant with life, ranging from the weird to the wonderful.

Corals’ Last Stand
Perched on the edge of the continental shelf, 300km from the Australian mainland lies Scott Reef. This ancient coral atoll, isolated for millions of years from other reef systems and mainland influences, has developed its own sub populations of unique species. Formed more than 15 million years ago Scott Reef is home to more than 1200 species including endangered seas snakes, green turtles and spectacular corals. Endangered pygmy whales and other rare cetaceans stop at Scott Reef on their annual migrations to feed on the abundant krill. It is one of only a few spots along the west coast of Australia where krill can be found in sufficient quantities to replenish the needs of these large creatures. But Scott Reef is under threat.
